Experiences
Discover a fascinating 30 acre historical, archaeological and environmental museum on Little Sarasota Bay. Experience prehistory inside A Window to the Past, an archaeology exhibit where you step inside a 15 foot high shell midden – created by prehistoric people as they discarded shells, animal bones and other refuse.
Enjoy shady nature trails through native plant life and boardwalks with scenic overlooks. Historic Spanish Point is a significant environmental site, and the museum has worked diligently to remove invasive exotics and restore native habitats.
As you wander through diverse habitats that include pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, tropical hammocks, mangrove swamps, tidal marshes and coastal beaches, be sure to visit the site’s historical buildings. Explore Florida’s pioneer life by touring Guptill House built in 1901, a citrus packing house and charming Mary’s Chapel. Stroll through the formal gardens created by Mrs. Potter Palmer and see an exhibit about her life in White Cottage.
History
In 1975 the 30 acre site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the first in Sarasota County. It was donated to Gulf Coast Heritage Association, Inc. in 1980 by the heirs of Mrs. Potter Palmer. The museum, named Historic Spanish Point, opened to the public in 1982.
